College dorm rooms are made to be utilitarian. Most have little more than the most basic things that a student will need. When it comes to beds, many colleges have taken to furnishing their dorm rooms with XL twin size beds because students are much taller these days. Before going out and purchasing the bedding for your dorm room, take the time to find out what size bedding you will need.

You may even want to talk to your roommate to see about coordinating your bedding with your roommate. What you need will depend in part on where you are going to school. After all, you certainly won’t need a down comforter if you are going to school in Arizona or southern Florida.

Here are some suggestions to help you pick your college dorm bedding.

Be practical

Although your mother may have put very fancy bedding on your bed at home, you don’t need to replicate that fancy bedding at college. Don’t forget that you’re the one who is going to have to launder all of your bedding. Think about what is practical, easy to maintain, and something that isn’t so similar to what everyone else has that everyone gets their bedding mixed up.

Decide how much bedding you need

Thinking about the amount of bedding you will need is also important. You should probably have at least two sets of sheets. That way, you can put a new set on the bed as soon as you take the other set off the bed. You may also want to be sure that both sets of sheets match your other bedding.

One great way to purchase bedding for a college dorm room is to purchase a bed in a bag. Depending on where you purchase it, it may come with a bed skirt, a top sheet, a bottom sheet, a comforter, a pillow case, and possibly a pillow sham. Some package deals will also include towels as part of the deal. The advantage to purchasing a Bed-in-a-Bag is that you get everything you’ll need for one flat price, and the price is always cheaper than what you’d pay if you were to buy all of the items separately.

Types of sheets

If you are going to college in a place where the climate is temperate, then a great choice would be cotton jersey sheets. These sheets are often called t-shirt sheets because they are made from the same material that is used for t-shirts. If you’re going to college in a place where the nights get cold, you might want to consider purchasing flannel sheets.

Where to buy

There are many places where you can find great bedding at reasonable prices. If you want to purchase bedding online, you can find it at Dorm Buys, and you can also find all sorts of other dorm accessories and necessities there. Kmart are all great places to find bedding at reasonable prices. Land’s End and Sears also have reasonably priced high quality bedding.  If you are willing to pay a bit more, you can get some higher end bedding at Bed Bath and beyond.

Think about what you’ll really need in the way of bedding and what you can choose to make your room look uniquely your own. You may want to talk to your roommate so you can purchase bedding that will work well together. You may also want to add some extra pillows to your bed so you can use your bed as a place to study or somewhere where visitors can sit. Make sure you really like something before purchasing it, because the more you like the bedding, the more comfortable you will feel in your dorm room.
