It is simply said that - EDI X12 (Electronic Data Interchange) is data format based on ASC X12 standards. Used to interchange explicit data between two or more trading partners. Term ’trading partner’ may signify enterprise, group of enterprises or some other object. In several cases it is just n enterprise or company.

EDI X12 is ruled by standards unconstrained by ASC X12. Each EDI X12 systems comprise set of message types like invoice, purchase order, healthcare claim, etc. Each message type has precise number allocated to it in its place of name. For example: an invoice is 810, purchase order is 850 and healthcare claim is 837.

Every EDI software comprises new version number. Version number examples: 4010, 4020, 4030, 5010, 5030, 6010, etc. Main EDI software releases start with new first number. For example: 4010 is one of the main releases, so is 5010. However 4020 is minor release. Minor releases comprise minor alterations or enhancements over main releases.
Accepting the change between main and minor releases is significant. Let say we have functioning translation for specific messages for release 4010, and if we want to upgrade to 4020 we will notice only a some changes between the two, and if we want to upgrade to release 5010 we might require making a lot of changes to existing translation.

EDI X 12 standards covers numeral of requirements for data structure, extractors, control numbers, etc. However numerous large companies execute they own even more strict instructions and requests. It can be all: exact data format needs for some fundamentals, neeed to comprise explicit sections etc. In HIPAA those precise trading partner requirements are typically registered in distinct document called Companion Guide. It is important to monitor these documents to the letter when applying EDI structures.

Standard EDI X12 format data is text file divided by segment, component and sub-element delimiters. we can open EDI X12 files using any text editor even standard Windows notepad.exe service. Carriage return and line feed are not required characters by EDI software If they are not present in the file after each section divider we will see continues line of data in the classic text editor. It is very tough to read data formatted in that method.
