Using the principle of ultrasound, ultrasonic flow meter is used to measure the velocity of a liquid or gas. There are three kinds of ultrasonic flow meters; transmission, reflection and open channel flow meters. Transmission flow meters can be divided into intrusive and non-intrusive varieties. Ultrasonic flow meter works on the principle that measures the difference of the transit time of ultrasonic pulses that transmit signals through the flow. Also, the difference between the two transmit times is used to calculate the flow rate. They are also more accurate and reliable than any other system. Ultrasonic flow measurement technology consists of transit-time technology, where the two transducers both as an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver; Ultrasonic Doppler technology, in which two ultrasonic transducers are employed in the system and lastly cross- correlation measurement, in which turbulence at a certain distance are correlated. Vortex flow meter is also known as the vortex shedding flow meter or oscillatory flow meter. It measures the vibration of the downstream vortexes caused by a barrier in the moving stream. Vortex flow meter and velocity of the flow are interrelated to each other. The rate at which these vortices shed is given by the following equation:

f = SV/L

Where,
f = the frequency of the vortices

L = the characteristic length of the bluff body

V = the velocity of the flow over the bluff body

S = Strouhal Number and is a constant for a given body shape

Disadvantages

  • Not a good choice for liquid fluid velocities.
  • Minimum length of the straight-run pipe if fixed.
  • Sometimes, installation also doesn’t provide for the straight-run pipe, so one needs to be very careful.

It involves minimum installation, low cost and no pressure loss and this makes portable ultrasonic flow meter the best choice than any other system. It is also suitable for balancing, cooling, heating and pollution control. The PT878 is an example of portable ultrasonic flow meter that is used to measure both clean liquid and the liquid that contains bubbles. It can easily be installed and runs within minutes.
