Toronto Chinese Surpass Toronto South Asians in Economy While Falling Behind in Population Amount

International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) marched towards North America last month. It chose Greater Toronto as the place for IIFA Award Ceremony and relevant activities. And South Asians have become the largest ethnic minority in Greater Toronto Area.

According to census data of population by Canada Statistical Bureau in 2006, the amount of South Asians in Greater Toronto was 684,000, which surpassed that of Chinese becoming the largest ethnic minority in Greater Toronto. And according to a report published by Canada Statistical Bureau last year, the amount of South Asians in Greater Toronto would be tripled by 2031, passing the 2.1 million mark.

While the amount of Chinese would be quadrupled by 2031, passing the 1.1 million mark. Apart from the rapid growth in population, districts of South Asians in Greater Toronto are presenting diversified characteristic. Besides, considering educational backgrounds and English levels of South Asian immigrants, since the change of Canada immigration policy, most South Asian immigrants coming to Canada in recent years are skill immigrants who have received higher education and about 60% of them can speak English.

In contrast, about 70% Indian immigrants can speak neither English nor French in 1980. However, the improvement of educational backgrounds and English levels doesn’t mean South Asian immigrants can succeed in economy. A report by Canada Statistical Bureau showed that there were more low-income families and unemployed people when comparing with local Canadians. In contrast, Chinese immigrants can make a greater and faster success in economy.
