Competitive Intelligence for the Smallest Businesses

Large companies are known to hire competitive intelligence analysts to gain an edge in marketing and sales production.  Small businesses do not have the financial wherewithal to nor do they have the need to do the dame thing in the same way.  However, even the smallest Mom-and-Pop business can use information freely available on the internet to their business advantage.

Competitive intelligence is basically a three-stage process when used by small, independent businesses- gathering, organizing and analyzing.  By utilizing one of the basic tools for data mining, the individual small store has enough information to compete at a higher level and increase their own profits.  The basic tool is the internet and the first resource is the search engine.  One warning when using information from online sources is that some of it is fake.  When you read something that seems too fantastic to believe, trust your instinct and don’t believe it.

Words you enter into a search engine make a huge difference in the information that is returned.  For example, if you have an auto parts business and, your first search should be about your competition in the local area.  If you query”auto parts retail, you are likely to get sites from anywhere in the world.  If you enter your postal code at the end of your query, a search engine will return the retail parts stores in your immediate area.  This is where you want to begin your competitive intelligent data gathering.

The next step is to look at your competition’s website.  Look for special deals, coupon offers, mechanize on sale, and the dates each begins and ends.  This type of information will tell you if you are able to compete with their prices.  It will, also, tell you if they are getting a better wholesale price from a vendor, you may or may not share.  Save the entire page to your desktop in a folder marked with your competitor’s name.  Begin organizing the data you collect immediately to avoid being overwhelmed.

The next thing you want to look for on the competition’s website is any data that says they are linked to a social media site such as face book, twitter, linkedin, or the latest Google social site.  If so, click on their links and ask to join them.  You should be a member of these sites already using an id that is not similar to your name or your company’s name.
